Across the Divide
Omar Sosa
2009

An unlikely pairing yields jubilant music on Omar Sosa’s Across the Divide: A Tale of Rhythm and Ancestry. The Cuban pianist–vocalist Sosa teams up with New England–based ethnomusicologist and banjoist Tim Eriksen, an expert in indigenous and adopted forms of American folk music. What could have been an academic exercise ends up a flowing journey of jazz chords and Afro-Cuban rhythms, folksy Americana and haunting spoken-word segments. In telling the story of their divergent ancestries, Sosa and Eriksen let no genre go unheard, no possible combination of sounds go untested. What results is a musical continuum where histories and geographies intermingle in beautiful ways, evoking specific times and places while boldly forging ahead to create new ones.

The journey begins with "Promised Land," a crepuscular two-chord vamp that immediately sets the lamplight low and the mood heavy. Sosa’s piano blends with a clarinet and a gossamer guitar in a contemplative groove, ripe for the keening piety of the Welsh hymn that Eriksen sings over it. "Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah / Pilgrim thru this barren land," he sings in a traditional Baptist vocal style. Overlaid are spoken word samples by the poet Langston Hughes, talking about the blacks that came to America as explorers before the era of slavery. The popular West Virginia hillbilly song "Sugar Baby Blues" gets a rockin’ funk workout, complete with Eriksen’s banjo underpinning. But there’s more here than just a facile mélange of styles; the banjo, that iconic folk instrument of the American South, originated in Africa. Woven into this music are fascinating parallels, and connections, between America’s ancestral black and white communities.

So we’ve got the "ancestry" part of the album title covered. How about the "rhythm" part? There’s a ton of it on Across the Divide. Nowhere are the beats more brilliantly concentrated than on the bubbling instrumental "Glu-Glu." A supple rhythm section pounds out a matrix of Afro-Cuban polyrhythms for Sosa, guitarist David Gilmore, and saxophonist Leandro Saint-Hill to fly over. Even when the rhythms aren’t so active, Across the Divide pulses with life. Sampled African voices mix with impressionist piano washes, electronic drums, mbira, and backward loops on "Ancestors," growing into an immersive rainforest of sound. As we push through the track’s misty, brooding ambience, we’re hearing the voices of our own ancestors, asking us to reflect on our own journeys.
